From the Franciscans

My grandfather used to tell me about the free lunches that were available when he went to the neighborhood saloon. And in those days the bartender would serve free sausages and sandwiches and hard-boiled eggs and of course, the salty smoked herring that would increase the patrons' thirsts for another stein or pitcher of beer. Today things are different for the most part. We hear the admonition "There's no free lunch! This expression is similar to the theological axiom attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "There is no cheap grace!" We need to reflect on this truth because it reminds us that the search for and the practice of GOODNESS, BEAUTY, AND TRUTH always involves the pain of self-giving.
